Why mentoring with SPAN is worth your time

Through SPAN, you can have that experience without the overhead of a formal program or lab. We will record the volunteer or mentoring hours you contribute, provide documentation if your institution requires it, and handle the logistics of matching and screening. You bring the intellectual guidance; we handle the rest.
Most importantly, you will know that your time helped form a new researcher. Not a line on a resume. Not a credential to buy. A student who learns how to ask better questions, read more carefully, and think with greater patience — because you showed them how.
How we protect the quality of your time
We do not select students based on their school name, GPA, awards, or family background. We look for responsibility, drive, curiosity, and genuine interest in the field.
Every student goes through a real interview process before we present them to you. We assess how they think, communicate, and handle feedback — not just what they have already achieved.
Tell us what preparation, commitment, or working style you need. We filter candidates accordingly and only introduce students who meet your criteria.
You choose whether to take on a student, how many to mentor, and when to pause new introductions. There is no pressure to accept any match.
Designed around your schedule
Mentorship can take many forms. You might recommend a reading path, meet a student for a short consultation, run a small group seminar, or guide a longer project. You set the format, frequency, and duration. We pre-screen students for fit, so the conversations you do have are meaningful from the start.
