SPAN exists because the path to research is often hidden. Many high school students are curious enough to begin real research but have no clear way to find a mentor, write a cold email, or understand how research actually works.
Our Mission
SPAN's mission is to lower the barrier to a first research experience. We connect motivated high school students with professors, Ph.D. students, postdoctoral researchers, and experienced scholars who are willing to share their guidance, all at no cost to the student.
We focus on remote-friendly fields where curiosity, reading, and careful thought are prioritized over expensive equipment: mathematics, computer science, artificial intelligence, physics, data science, and adjacent theoretical or computational areas.
Why Research Access Matters
Research access is uneven. Students at well-resourced schools may meet professors through family connections, paid programs, or summer research institutes. Students without those networks rarely know where to begin. SPAN is here to provide a free, accessible introduction to the world of research.

Our Story
SPAN began from a simple frustration: many high school students are curious enough to explore real research, but the path to finding a mentor is often hidden. They read about breakthroughs, want to try their hand at real problems, and then hit a wall the moment they ask how do I actually start? The answer, for most of them, is silence.
In remote-friendly fields like math, computer science, AI, and theoretical physics, the first step into research rarely comes from a form or an application. It comes from knowing which professor to email, how to phrase the question, and which programs are worth applying to. Students whose families or schools already have those networks move through that world easily. Everyone else is left guessing.
SPAN was created to make that first step easier, fairer, and more human. We believe students should not need wealth, connections, or prior research experience to begin. They need curiosity, guidance, and someone willing to open the door — and we exist to be that door for as many students as we can reach.
